Chapter Fifteen

Tensions

"I was really hoping you had better news," Oshrak said. "The Nine are gone? Are you sure they're dead?"

Suzanna sighed. "I don't even know where to begin. I had a vision in the study, Oshrak. Naomee left messages for me. Now I have to go to Kasari and search for more cryptic clues."

Oshrak immediately started shaking her head. "You can't leave, not now. Haven't you noticed how volatile this place is? Without you, I'd only give it a week at most before they start killing each other."

"You'll have to hold them together without me," Suzanna said wretchedly.

"Are you mad? Me? I'm just another daemon to the daevas!"

"You were the commander of the Daemon-Ra, weren't you? And you are still Ambassador to Bastion, even if that title is somewhat meaningless now," said Lukas. "Surely that counts for something?"

Oshrak waved her hands in a gesture of futility. "Oh, perhaps it does to a few of them, but they were our mortal enemies a few weeks ago." Her expression grew distinctly disgruntled. "That and Krisoph definitely hates me."

That brought her up short. Suzanna looked at her friend in puzzlement. Oshrak was normally never bothered by anything as trivial as a personal relationship. "Why would he hate you? He doesn't even know you."

"Apart from him being a daeva and me being a daemon?" she replied glibly. "He lost friends during that battle in the swamp, and he lost everything that he and his followers built over the last year. I remind him of his failure to protect his people, so of course he doesn't like me. He'll just about speak to Kavan, and sometimes him and Karanith snap at each other, but I'm just waiting for him to pick actual fights with the daemons, starting with me."

"You can't let it come to that," she said. Suzanna grasped Oshrak's arm urgently. "You have to save as many as you can. They have to live or there won't be enough left of Aven-Ra to be restored!"

"...What in the name of the Endless Sea are you talking about?"

Suzanna stopped, and could not think of a word to say. The shape of the knowledge existed somewhere deep inside her, and she had no idea how to make sense of it. All she had were the edges, and it seemed to constantly slip away from her sight. She tried to reach out into the dreamscape, and somehow find meaning.

"Aven-Ra lives in the heart and soul of the avenratha," she said slowly. "They don't remember who they are, but they still hear the call and know it for truth. If the avenratha are lost, then Aven-Ra will be lost with them."

Oshrak shook off her hand. "You make less sense every day," she said irritably. "Who or what are the avenratha?"

"I... I don't know." Suzanna hung her head, and felt ready to sit down and sob. That was the only answer the dreamscape could give her. It was truth, for a given value of true, but that didn't make it useful.
